Medigap / supplement Insurance

Medigap (Medicare Supplement) Overview

Medigap, also called Medicare Supplement Insurance, is private coverage that works with Original Medicare. It helps pay for out-of-pocket costs that Medicare Part A and Part B don’t fully cover, such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.

Who Can Enroll

 You’re eligible if you:

  • Have both Medicare Part A and Part B

  • Are not enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan

  • Live in the state where the Medigap policy is sold

When to Enroll

  •  Medigap Open Enrollment: A six-month window starting the first month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During this period, you can buy any Medigap plan sold in your state without medical underwriting.

  • After this window, insurers may require medical underwriting and can charge more or deny coverage based on health history—unless you have a guaranteed-issue right.

  • Guaranteed-Issue Rights: Special protections allow you to buy certain Medigap policies without medical underwriting if you lose other coverage or move out of a plan’s area.

What to Consider

  • Standardized plans: Most states offer Plans A–N, with identical core benefits across insurers. Only the premiums differ.

  • Monthly premium: Varies by plan type, insurer, age, and rating method.

  • Prescription drugs: Medigap policies sold today do not include Part D coverage. You need to enroll a separate plan Part D Plan for Prescription Drug coverage, even if you do not take any prescriptions.

  • Travel coverage: Some plans include limited emergency benefits when traveling outside the U.S.

  • Provider freedom: Visit any doctor or hospital nationwide that accepts Medicare—no networks to worry about.
